But Jesus gives the solution for troubled hearts. The news that Jesus is leaving their presence is troubling the hearts and minds of the disciples. Do Not Let Your Hearts Be Troubled (14:1) The scene has not changed and the chapter break occurs in the very middle of Jesus’ conversation with his disciples about his leaving them. This is where we pick up in the account as we begin John 14. Peter wants to know why they cannot follow him (13:37) and Jesus responds by asking if they are ready to lay down their lives for him. After telling them to love one another as Jesus has loved them, he tells them that he is going away and where he is going they cannot come (13:33). Jesus is left with the other eleven apostles. Judas has been identified as the betrayer and has been sent out. The thirteenth chapter of John records the scene in the upper room. By this time tomorrow Jesus will have been executed on the cross and placed in a tomb. From now on you do know him and have seen him.It is the final night of Jesus’ life. 7 If you know me, you will know my Father also. No one comes to the Father except through me. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. 4 And you know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”ġ4 “Do not let your hearts be troubled.

Jesus tells us He wants to be with us always He wants to comfort us He promises that with Him all our sins will be forgiven and His mercy will never cease. Help us to remember that You alone are the source of all our needs You guide us on the path that leads to joy You teach us the real truth of life and death You shine upon us and our lives… We look to other sources to answer hard questions, to justify our actions and to seek comfort.

Jesus came as the way, the truth and the life to protect us, to lead us and to comfort us always.ĭear Lord, we struggle in our lives with doubt, loneliness and fear of the unknown.
